Characteristics of Excellent Posters

In the first post, you could read about the importance of using posters in the language classroom. For example, we mentioned that posters facilitates the teaching and learning process because they are attractive and focused on a specific subject. However, you might be wondering how to make a poster look attractive and well organized. Well, in this post, you are going to learn how to create excellent posters by reading about their characteristics because posters is not about writing some words in a paper and adding images. They are far more than that.
First of all, posters must have a purpose. For example to teach, to illustrate a concept, to motivate, to show a process or to show contrast. If your poster do not have a specific purpose, you might end up mixing ideas and at the end they will look confusing. Also, posters should be made of a strong paper to make them durable. Furthermore, posters have to be appealing to the eye in order to call the attention of the students. They should have a solid tone or a very simple gradient background. The color of the background should contrast with the color of font. Example of good combinations are green on purple, purple on yellow, orange on blue, and white on black.  In addition, posters should have 2-3 colors. Too many colors makes them look chaotic and unprofessional, but having no color makes them boring and plain. The borders can be either simple or elaborated as long as they do not distract students from the content. When it comes to fonts and font styles, sans serif fonts are the best option because they are more legible than serif fonts from a distance. Do not forget that posters should contain images related to the topic.  Besides that, posters have to be well organized and simple in relation to content. In other words, the information should be organized in a logical way from top to bottom so that your students won't get confused. Last but not least, is necessary that posters contain the exact information the students need. It is better to use two or three posters than to try to cram too much information on to one.

As you have seen, making a good poster is not an easy task. However, now that you know what the characteristics of good posters are, we are sure that when you create one, it will look amazing. Below you can see some examples and a video to get ideas from and understand better.

  1. I Think that a poster must attract attention. Especially when being presented as a poster fair,it has to compete with many other posters for example when we choose the best poste of one Group in the classroom,so poster generraly require reduced content as well as getting to the point.Very nice blog

  2. I agree with the information already given, because before I thought that poster should be something full of colors, but now I realized that it should be attractive and not distractive to the eye.

  3. We must keep in mind that posters should capture people attention as soon as they pass for the place in which they are located, so in this situation the information should be concise. According to the post, we think that posters should have a purpose too as many other teaching resources, no matter if many people see them just as simple piece of paper stuck to the wall.
